Coastal Navigation (105)

Learn the Fundamentals of Navigation.

What You'll Learn

The ASA 105 Coastal Navigation course is a theoretical navigation course using Southern California charts, not East Coast training charts. You’ll be exploring real life local boating and navigation issues. We break down the navigation process into easily understood and practical steps.

You will gain an understanding of “Voyage Planning” using paper charts and traditional tools. Yes, everyone uses electronic tools out on the water, but when you’re at home dreaming about your next vacation, you’ll know how to plan the entire voyage, including where to go when you get there.

Coastal Navigation is not just about getting from point A to point B safely. We’ll teach you how to plan a sailing vacation anywhere in the world. This is a fun classroom class. It is not an on the water class, but it will change the way you think about piloting a sailboat.

Our Coastal Navigation class encompasses both lecture and practice on charts. The lectures are done as a group; then each student will work on their own navigation package. Every student will receive a great deal of personal attention.

And, at the end of the class if you feel like you would benefit from some extra instruction, you may attend the course again at no cost.

Advanced Coastal Cruising (106)

Advanced Seamanship Training Further Off Shore.

What You'll Learn

Is your goal to be a safer sailor? Plan and safely sail an extended coastal voyage? This is an invitation only course, that will significantly improve your voyage planning, seamanship, emergency handling and crew training skills. It is geared for sailors who are serious about safety, have cruising experience and the desire to test their decision making further from shore.

The emphasis of this course is safety. We will plan and execute a coastal voyage and discuss the Captain’s responsibilities for crew management, boat preparation, equipment selection, balanced sailing in larger seas and emergency procedures.

Our seven day ACC course is longer than many other school’s programs. We will be sailing day and night, teaching eight to ten hours a day. The first part of the course is taught from Marina del Rey, which is a perfect venue for practicing emergency boat handling like, crew overboard recovery. We will review the coastal navigation problems and weather issues. You will plan the voyage, and after a complete safety inspection including night navigation drills, prepare the boat and get underway.

We will plan a four-five day adventure, sailing to several destinations making landfall and departing anchorages at night. Sailing at night and vessel identification is new to many sailors and ultimately these skills will give you greater awareness of safety at sea, good seamanship decisions, and emergency preparation and response.

If you are not a student of Bluewater Sailing, please email your sailing resume to: info@bluewatersailing.com and call to schedule a follow up.

We only offer this group course a few times a year.

What's Included

Our Advanced Coastal Cruising course will prepare you to skipper a larger 40’+ vessel with a more experienced crew out of site of land, offshore and in overnight conditions. Included in your tuition is:

  • 60+ Hours of on-the-water instruction
  • Membership in our Bareboat Chartering Club—As long as you remain a student you will always receive chartering privileges. This is a value of $300 per year.
  • With an American Sailing Association certification (optional) you’ll receive their official log book, certification documents, monthly publication and more.

Docking Endorsement (118)

Learn to Dock Safely.

Professional

ASA Instructor Qualification Clinic (IQC – 200’s)

Become an ASA Instructor.

What You'll Learn

In a quote from Edmund he uses the term “ablest navigator” to describe the concept of being an experienced mariner.  And he suggests correctly that the most experienced mariner will have the knowledge to adeptly handle any conditions thrown at him, or her. And therefore, will be more likely to survive to sail another day should those conditions have been adverse.

How do we get experience, or knowledge? Instructors or mentors, at least initially, followed by a lot of “doing it.”

Traditionally, sailing has been a highly specialized skill set – or set of skills, rather – that has been passed down from one sailor to another for thousands of years. Only in the last hundred years have organizations been formed to provide teaching and testing standards for schools to bring sailing to the masses. The American Sailing Association (ASA) was founded in 1983 for this purpose, and throughout the decades it has been certifying new Instructors to teach new generations of sailors as part of its charter.

That’s where Bluewater Sailing comes in. We conduct semi-yearly ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics (IQCs) on even years to help qualified sailors realize their dreams of passing on the experience and knowledge to other sailing enthusiasts.

You may enroll in an IQC if you have the ambition to be a true sailing professional and:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Possess ample sailing experience (at least 3 years)
  • Have teaching experience or can demonstrate an aptitude for clearly communicating sailing to the novice and advanced sailor
  • Are capable of performing to the Standards as stated in the ASA International Sailing Log Book

What's Included

By qualifying to the ASA Instructor Standards you obtain internationally recognized credentials. These credentials document your experience and level of proficiency – from Basic Keelboat Sailing to Offshore Passage making – and assist you in commanding the respect you have earned.
